is going to sit over louisiana, through arkansas and eventually push into kentucky and tennessee and stay there for a while. it's not moving east ward all that quickly. and you can see the heavy rain and thunderstorms all across the gulf coast. right through louisiana. stretching right up into northwestern parts of mississippi as well. and a closer look shows you just how much lightning is associated with these thunderstorms as well. it's just streaming in off the gulf of mexico. and that is going to allow perhaps two to four inches of rain to fall in this area. and again, that's over the next 48 hours. and it will slowly spread eastward. that's a look at the weather across the country. now, here's a peek out your window. >> the new york city is 48 degrees. not bad, above average. we're also looking at temperatures today to top out in the upper 50s. and charlotte north carolina, looks pretty did there. minus a couple showers in orlando, florida, 81 degrees. >> so really the entire east coast enjoying above-average temperatures. florida's about 10 degrees above average. >> i love it when y

battling winter weather from tennessee to the carolinas. streets and sidewalks were coated in ice and snow and we got out of the deep freeze around the washington area today. boy are we in for a roller coasr the next week. kim martucci is in the weather center with a preview for us. >> jim, it only took 108 hours to get above freezing since midnight last tuesday. that's how long we were below freezing. at noon we ticked up to 33. happy to say we managed a high of 37 this afternoon. at this late hour, temperatures are easing back down in to the 20s. right now we're 30 but 21 gaithersburg, 23 frederick and 29 la plata. everyone is in the 20s tonight. not as cold as where we have been but a chilly start to your sunday morning. our snow shower activity has winded down. we had flakes off and on throughout the day but nothing really accumulated. let me help you plan through the day hour by hour tomorrow. low to mid-20s. 30 by 11:00 with bright sunshine. middle to upper 30s on the way. i have to talk about a hiccup to your commute on monday morning. that involves ice. more details when i see you

-- jobbies. -- rockies. the warmth is going to be pushed northward through the ohio valley, the tennessee valley, toward the mid-atlantic here. by saturday 60s. by sunday we will have some 70- degree readings i believe in our region. it will be barely above zero in bismarck. all of this because of the storm down in texas. there's another big storm out on the west coast with the rains along the coast. the mountain snows inland. these will pile up here quite a bit. the rain has been piling up in texas yesterday. today louisiana along with the threat for severe weather, but that storm is lifting more to the north than the east. still, we're going to get some clouds out of this later today, tonight, as they'll be streaming in from the west. then tomorrow afternoon we're going to get some rain in here. so that the commute home friday or the getaway friday afternoon, friday evening is going to be a slow one. that's why i'm going to yell loy' letter -- yellow alert tomorrow. today 54, at least the way we're going. tonight 235 to 40. tomorrow -- 35 to 40. tomorrow dry in the morning. rain and sho

. another storm is pulling out of this area, into the tennessee valley to go south of us. we are caught between the two storms. neither one is really cranking out too much for you. we are kind of going to end up in that dead zone. so we're going to get some snow breaking out tomorrow, but in terms of it becoming a bigger storm, just don't think so. how much snow, maybe an inch downtown or half an inch in culpepper. the winner will be across the divide in the ski resorts in oakland and down towards timberline. cold and dry in the morning. morning commute is dry. evening commute will be slow. they will have some snow. the bulk will see a -- will see closer to an inch. clear and very cold. few high clouds by dawn as the winds die down. there could be single digits. could be 9 in leesburg tonight and hay market. the snow could break out west of town. mostly cloudy and cold elsewhere. teens and 20s. snow breaks out in the metro area with the high of 26 to 30. again, one to three inches are possible by 8:00 tomorrow. three days we are looking at temperatures with the weather alert tomorrow. t

through the tennessee valley and then south of us. we'll be caught in between systems. consequently no one storm is going to become very well organized with a bunch of moisture. so we're kind of having the leftovers from each storm basically. and a nice day tomorrow, but don't get your hopes up if you're a big snow lover. how much snow? maybe an inch downtown, maybe an inch to an inch and a half in southern maryland and an inch towards frederick. this will be a pretty even snow from the north to the south with an inch, maybe two inches in spots. highest amounts across the divide and ski resorts. that's good news. so cool and dry overnight. morning commute, dry. you might want to warm up your car a little bit. evening commutes will be slow with the snow. again round two, one to three inches by friday evening. i'm sort of favoring closer to an inch as i look at more and more stuff. 8 to 18 tonight, clear and very cold. some high clouds by dawn. some areas in the single digits. 10 in laytonsville. 15 at college park. 13 in fairfax, but 9 in leesburg, manassas, and probably middleburg too. by

, a few warnings in the mountains. southern kentucky, northeastern tennessee, ice storm warnings, freezing rain a big problem, down i-81 towards knoxville out of virginia. here is the snow. this first batch, i talked about "this morning edition" morning, the air is so dry it's evaporating. when it was up in pittsburgh and indianapolis they had snow totals that were in the half inch or inch an hour category of snow rates. western ohio look how quickly this is moving, it's starting to clear out. this will be with us on and off for the entire afternoon, starting the next hour or so, with us through early this evening. that's going to hamper the commute. i know it looks like it's snowing in a lot of places but it's up here and west where we're getting reports of the snow reaching the ground, light snow in roanoke at this hour. temperatures, they are cold enough. with temps at 21 in fairfax, 22 anderson, whatever falls will stick to untreated surfaces. the dew point is 1, the temperature is 24. a 23-degree spread with humidity too too dry at the surface but that will change. our weather headlin

's going on. heavy storms, tornadic thunderstorms across portions of alabama, georgia, eastern tennessee. this is a severe thunderstorm watch just to our west and southwest till 4:00. but all of this water is coming off to the north and the east. so it's not out of the question that one, maybe two inches of rain could fall if we get under some of these heavy downpours which looks like they'll stay generally west of us for the afternoon and evening hours. this may be closer to the metro than this model is depicting but we're going to watch it nonetheless because the storms will move northeast. the line will move toward us. by midnight, 1:00 it's over us. then we'll push it away as we get toward the morning rush hour with snows returning into the mountains. the cold air comes back. we're going to watch that for thursday and friday morning, a little disturbance is going to come across. that could flow some flurries or even light snow our way. after tonight well very to watch for friday morning to see if we have any issues. going to be some late thunderstorms. tonight we're into the 30s and

as tennessee, multiple states reporting deaths because of frigid temperatures and nasty winter weather. an arctic air mass blamed for the low temperatures invading the nation from the midwest to the northeast and bringing with it the coldest temperatures of the winter. temperatures dropping to nearly negative 40 # degrees fahrenheit in parts of northern minnesota and negative 30 degrees in parts of maine. weather advisories in effect as far south as tennessee and virginia tonight. that region expected to be hit with freezing rain and sleet as well throughout the night. the cold snap already causing death and destruction across the country. a 70-year-old man found frozen to death inside his illinois home, and a 38-year-old man dead of hype therm ya outside his home in green bay. this after a 77-year-old found frozen to death over the weekend. slick roadways outside cincinnati last night contributed to an 86-car pileup leaving a 12-year-old girl dead. the cold weather remains through thursday morning. much of the north and northeast will be freezing this weekend. i'll pact felt by consum

. the storm has already dumped freezing rain in states including north carolina and tennessee. it's been dropping snow in ohio, pennsylvania right during the evening commute. along with a light dusting here in new york city over the last couple of hours. it's just the latest winter insult coming during a streesk frigid weather. animation shows how the cold air descended on the country last weekend as a drop in the jet stream sent temperatures plummeting across much of the country. all of those areas in bluish thing there is where it is below freezing. you can see the cycle as two separate cold fronts moved across the area. freezing conditions have been causing problems in firefighters. this lawrntion, massachusetts, first responders found themselves encased in ice as they fought a fire in a three story building last night. the deputy fire chief says the frozen fire hydrants and fire lines are making things tough. in chicago folks finally saw more than an inch of snow for the first time in 335 days. chicago hasn't seen a streak close to that in more than 70 years. , during this artic cold

the arch looked like at the tennessee beach at tennessee cove for decades. for many years it's also been a favorite spot for pictures. but on december 29th. a graduate student at the institute of technology was on the beach taking pictures when all of a sudden that arch came tumbling down. the graduate student and his geologist father said the noise was so loud it also blocked out the sounds of the waves. >>> it starts way up here and you see the curser this red line. when the systems come like this they come up over the cold and down over the land like this they don't have a chance to warm up. a lot of times these systems worm up but this one coming down is going to be a cold one. cold systems carry little moisture with them. so we're not expecting rain or precipitation from it. this one will see a few sprinkles but not a lot. maybe .01, .1 at the most. fog is going to be a problem tomorrow morning. as you head off to work get going around town, early morning the fog will be in the east bay and south bay valley. the dewpoints are running right about where the temperatures are right now.

the moisture still way back here across western parts of tennessee and northern mississippi. it's going to take a good while for it to get here. the air mass we have overhead is really, really dry. so most of those rain drops will evaporate before they get to the ground. that being said, our chilly and dry saturday will turn into a cloudy saturday night and an opportunity for some light rain showers or even some light snow showers coming through. again, not looking for much, if anything, in the way of accumulation. then the drier air and sunshine back in place by about noon tomorrow on into the early parts of the upcoming week. a relatively dry, clear stretch coming in. here we are at 1:00 in the morning. not much going on. cloudy skies around. maybe an opportunity for a little bit of moisture sneaking on in. with temperatures at or just below the freezing mark, some of that could add up to a little bit in the way of snow. how much snow? maybe up to an inch from essentially the i-95 corridor north and west. not going to be a big deal. conversational snowflakes at the most. today, sunshine this

're also told, was killed in nashville, tennessee, where a tree fell on his home. you're looking here -- look at the colors, the warnings, we're going to talk to chad maiers in a minute. i want to talk to miguel marquez, he's 60 miles north of atlanta. miguel, we saw the picture here of this tornado. tell me what you're seeing on the ground right now. >> a wide swath of damage through adairsville, it looks like, for the most part. there is a hotel that has been shredded by this storm. there is a plant that makes heavy machinery shredded by this tornado. there are several businesses along the adairsville highway, just off i-75 that have been damaged. there are power lines down throughout the area. trees are down, smashed into cars, trailers overturned, trailers damaged as well. we have seen a couple of neighborhoods where there is fairly significant damage to trailer homes. not clear where that person died, but it is not very far from where i am right now. it is still raining very hard here. the rain has been consistent. it has let up just a little bit. the other thing that is interest
